Atrial Fibrillation Call to Action

24 November 2016

The Right Hon Mark Durkan, MP for Foyle has lent his support to the Arrhythmia Alliance and AF Association who are calling on the National Screening Committee to reverse its previous recommendation and to endorse a commissioned National Screening Programme for People over 65 years of age at risk of AF.

Despite the recommendation of the European Society of Cardiology, that opportunistic screening for AF in over 65’s should take place, to date this has not been embraced by the NHS. Whilst pulse palpitations will detect persistent AF, for those patients with paroxysmal AF, which by its nature is irregular and transitory, the condition will often remain undiagnosed. Longer term monitoring may help provide a more effective diagnostic solution in such cases. https://www.derrynow.com/news/durkan-calls-for-screening-programme-for-older-people-at-risk-of-common-heart-rhythm-disorder/128756
